Construction, quality control, and safety go hand-in-hand. It’s no surprise that with the increasingly complex (and dangerous) jobs being performed by crews today, the safety rules and regulations have become more stringent.

For anyone responsible for maintaining safety standards on construction sites, check it out: we’re going to take a look at 7 different providers of construction safety inspection software, each one specially designed to ensure you're keeping your construction projects safe and compliant.

When it comes to evaluating the best construction safety inspection software you’ll have specific requirements for you and your business, but here are a few challenges you may face (or problems you want to solve) when buying a construction safety app:

Compliance: The construction industry is subject to numerous safety regulations and standards as mentioned above. Having good quality control software for construction is going to help make sure you and your team aren’t missing any of those regulatory requirements (and avoiding large fines while you’re at it).

Manual and Paper-Based Processes: Relying on manual inspection processes and paper-based documentation is time-consuming and prone to errors. This may lead to inefficiencies, delays in identifying safety issues, and challenges in organizing and managing critical safety data - yet another reason it’s so beneficial to migrate those processes to a digital construction checklist app.

Risk Identification and Mitigation: Identifying all potential hazards and assessing risks on construction sites without a structured system can be challenging if not downright impossible. Definitely, an area where adopting a digital solution can have an enormous return on investment for you.

Inadequate Incident Reporting: Ineffective incident reporting and analysis without an automated system means you won’t know where to focus to minimize, and hopefully eliminate, employee accidents.

Cost: The obvious one. At some point or another price matters, regardless of the size of your organization.

To recap, to be considered one of the best construction safety inspection software it should help manage the above challenges through features such as automated, digital inspection processes, real-time reporting, and dynamic template building - all while being affordable.

Now let’s take a look at some of these different vendors.

2. Safety 101

Created by a team of non-safety professionals, they reached out to working safety leaders to see what was important to them in software.

They came up with Safety 101 - a web-based application designed to help put technology to work for your safety system.

Unfortunately, they don’t seem to offer a free trial, and there is an extra fee tacked on to data usage over 10GB for your account.

Regardless, if you’re looking for a simple web-based solution, this could be a great starting point.

Key Features:

  • Training Tracker
  • Employee Portal
  • Incident Manager
  • Document Manager
  • Reports & Analytics
  • Alerts & Reminders

Pricing:

  • No free trial
  • Pricing begins at $85 / month.

3. SHEQsys

They call themselves the ultimate SHERQ management solution, or in other words construction quality control software.

Another online web application which will allow users to investigate, report and evaluate work as it relates to safety, health, environment, and quality (SHEQ).

SHEQsys has what they call ‘modules,’ within their application. Modules seem to be their term for different sections or features available to users. Some of these modules include concessions, audits, feedback and checklists.

Another one that unfortunately does not have a free trial available - it seems you have to reach out and schedule a demo to see it in action. On the bright side, by being subscription-based

Key Features:

  • Integrated modules
  • Extensive Investigative Tools
  • Reports
  • Dashboards
  • Automatic Email Notifications

Pricing:

  • No free trial
  • No public pricing

4. Smartlog by Safesmart

Smartlog by Safesmart is a construction safety app based in the U.K.

Similar to some of the other vendors on this list, Smartlog’s construction site inspection software is only available to demo on a call with a sales rep.

That being said, it looks like it could be worth the meeting - Smartlog’s modules include e-learning, risk assessment, facilities management and a couple more.

They also offer a suite of solutions (available for an additional, separate fee) like fire risk assessments and health and safety audits.

Reach out to their team to discuss pricing or to schedule a demo.

Key Features:

  • Risk Management
  • Premises Management
  • E-Learning

Pricing:

  • No free trial
  • No public pricing

5. StackFM

StackFM bills itself as a collaborative infrastructure management solution (CIMS) but can also easily be included in the construction safety app category.

The platform helps businesses manage tasks like work orders, asset management, activity logs and more.

Founded in 2013, they offer a variety of training options for teams who are interested in adopting the software.

In addition to doing so, you can request data transfer assistance or data entry via their team of specialists, at an extra cost.

StackFM boasts clients in several industries as well, so this widespread applicability might be a sign of a flexible product.

Without an easily accessible free trial, however, you’ll have to get in touch with their team to see pricing and a demo.

Key Features:

  • Asset Tracking
  • Moves Management
  • Activities Logs
  • Leasing

Pricing:

  • No free trial
  • No public pricing

6. VARIO Software

This is yet another internationally headquartered vendor for the list of best construction safety inspection software. VARIO is based out of Germany and is easily the most deeply complex offering here.

A total solution for SHEQ policy no matter the type of your organization, there is no shortage of features available within the entire VARIO software suite.

CRM, cash register system, business intelligence, electronic data interchange - the possibilities are seemingly endless.

For multinational companies, this could be a no-brainer, all-in-one solution. For the rest of us, however, it might be a little overwhelming.

Fortunately, this one does offer a free version (albeit with limited feature usability) so you can try it out before fully committing.

Key Features:

  • Asset Tracking
  • Moves Management
  • Activities Logs
  • Leasing

Pricing:

  • No free trial
  • No public pricing

7. SaferMe

SaferMe was founded in 2012 and is based out of New Zealand.

Just like the name implies, SaferMe utilizes hazard data to enhance your safety protocols and drive digital transformation.

Interestingly, this is one of the only pieces of software we’ve seen here that is marketed specifically for health and safety consultants.

They are also positioned towards ‘large organizations with distributed workers,’ so it seems apparent that they might not be well-suited for a smaller team or one that all works together in person.

There are a limited number (3) of reviews available on Capterra - that being said, they are all positive and it seems worth checking out if you fall into one of the two categories of users they suggest.

Key Features:

  • Asset Tracking
  • Moves Management
  • Activities Logs
  • Leasing

Pricing:

  • Free for limited users, forms, and features.
  • Paid plans begin at $500 annually.

Frequently Asked Questions About Construction Safety Inspection Software

As we mentioned at the beginning of this post, the right construction safety app for your business is going to depend on several factors.

There is no one better to make those evaluations than yourself (at least to get started) so here are 10 of the most commonly asked questions from those evaluating solutions.

1. Does the software make us compliant with local safety regulations and standards?

Ensure that the software aligns with OSHA, ANSI, or other industry-specific safety standards and regulations (otherwise, what’s the point?)

2. What is the software's user interface and user experience like?

Evaluate the user-friendliness of the interface, as it will impact how effectively your team can adopt and use the software.

3. Can the software be customized to our specific needs?

Can you build your inspections, forms, and checklists? Can you customize category fields or create teams to help organize your processes?

4. Does it support mobile devices for on-site inspections?

This one is, in my humble opinion, table stakes. If your application can’t easily accommodate in-the-field inspections it’ll probably be more trouble than it’s worth.

5. How does the software handle data collection and storage?

This is more important for large enterprises, but data security is a huge concern, especially over the last few years. Make sure whatever you’re doing is kept inside the organization and not broadcast to whomever, whenever.

6. What reporting and analytics features are available?

Depending on the job at hand, this can be a massive necessity or a nice-to-have. Generally speaking, if you’re looking to drive digital transformation for your construction safety inspection process, you’d be well-served to have a nice, neat dashboard or report that can identify and summarize trends.

7. Can the software integrate with other systems and software?

Again, more important for larger teams. Most commonly you’ll find integrations into CAD software or GIS, to bring together project and site mapping (planning) with the on-site safety and task management (execution).

8. Is there an offline access capability?

Anyone who has worked in the unfinished subterranean levels of a site knows that getting internet access is not a guarantee.

By having offline access, you can comfortably work regardless of your reception, and simply re-sync the data as soon as you reconnect.

9. What is the pricing structure, and are there hidden costs?

Annual versus monthly, subscription versus one-time purchase. Those are, by and away the two most common variables in pricing software but it is critical to always read the fine print and make sure you’re not locking yourself into a restrictive contract or agreement.
